my problem with advertising is not the advertising its self, but WHAT is being advertised.

Why does everything have to deal with clothing, make-up and shoes? Are women not capable of comprehending anything else?
Don't get me wrong, i am a MONSTER GIRLY GIRL, but the companies that are being advertised are way too boring and plain for me. Show me some Ashley Stewart, some trendy funky hairdos and how to acheive them, find a store like Joyce Leslie that caters to plus-size. I dont wanna see a woman in turtle neck with a coat on. Does she not let her body breathe? Is she ashamed to let some skin show? You can be classy and sexy all at once without dressing like a nun.
Why can't there be advertisments for cool home accessories(Bombay is ok, little too boring though for me), tech sites, gadgets? Show me the latest baby phat cell phone holder. Show me laptops in a rainbow of colors. Show me wild and funky jewelry. Show me the hottest cars for this year. The hottest cds, dvds, and games.
Help me get the most out of things i already own. Tell me about the newest cocktail concoctions so when i go out, i can order it.

This brings me to another point, i know that when undertaking a big project you have to consider what the majority is interested in. What is going to hold interest and what is going to help sell. And if the majority is only interested in make-up, clothes and shoes then that's who is going to be catered to.
Just remember though, not every woman wants to see that and only that all the time, and after the first 3 times your going to lose the interest of those that wanna see other things.
Like me!

Mind the gap please!

Thank you for sharing your story and your poem. It sure is a shame that this thinking is more mainstream than we care to admit.

Supporting each other and showing "them" that we will not be put in a corner and made to hide is another reason why I am so proud to be part of forums like this one.

Adore the poem :-)

And Dandy, I am sooo on the same page with you -- I am a girly girl who just happens to be a computer/gadget junkie -- I adore technology!

Here is the problem we run into -- trying to get the vendors to support a magazine and then trying to get the consumers to support the vendors support of the magazine! I recently spliced an important message into a brand new thread so that we can get focused feedback -- please click below to read and offer your response...

Here is the link -- please click here to view it an offer your comments :-)

To start up a magazine is a gamble. Not just to find the right niche in the market but to have advertisers willing to buy space in your mag to begin with.

Alot designers who do design plus size fashions, seem to have an unwritten code that "we make it but we don't have to advertise it in fat chic magazines"

Designers, like Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karen, Nicole Miller and Ralph Lauren to name a few all have plus size clothes. However, if and when they do advertise their line, the models must meet the designers specifications for the ad. In other words they don't want big girls showing off their big girl fashions...How twisted is that? Eeker

The designers such as the Tommy Hilfigers, Donna Karans, Calvin Klein etc.... really don't have to push their plus lines because they have enough revenue coming in from their high end line/s and have already built a reputation and have a large following.

I think they did it to pacify their critics as well as a tax rightoff to put their money in other investments. If they lose money on their plus line they are going to discontinue marketing it without a blink of an eye. And its not as though they are going to go as high as a 14 (maybe some 16's at the most, but doubt).

JLo is a proven point that she didn't even bother given her plus line a try. The plus size market is totally dispensible. We are the sarificial lambs.
